Great poem, but...

It is very personal. I have family growing up in a world that was trashed 3 years ago today, in ways that were more obscene than anything I could have imagined since the height of the Cold War. I hate it that I have to explain to my kids why humankind will have to wait to evolve past primitive death-dealing cultism. No great national efforts -- no megaproject towers, no space programs, no medical "Manhattan Project" miracles can be focused upon, because as the ancient poem goes: "the Barbarians are coming".

We have seen the ugliness of our subhuman nature emerge as a controlling influence in world, national and personal affairs. This isn't the world I wanted to hand to my kids or grandkids.

It is suddenly no longer enough to have integrity, courage, physical and intellectual capability, or any of the qualities we prize in our self-development. We must now also clear the decks of poisonous politics that threaten our lives in our streets and neighborhoods, pollutes the airwaves and confuses our citizens.

This is going to take a while. I'm extremely pissed, quite frankly. It's a 20-year detour, brought to us by pure greed and ambition.
