from what i understand, the alternative operating systems can be just as vulnerable

No. Internet Explorer and Outlook/Outlook Express are products which don't adhere to or violate many standards and are vulnerable to attacks by their design. Most virus forms having spread for decades through Microsoft products would be impossible in the Unix world. Another inherent weakness even of XP is that normally users implicitly have administrator rights; it's not easy to set up an account with limited user access privileges. With Linux it's standard to have a user account and only use the admin account ("root") for system management. That way, even if a virus did get through, the damage it could do would be very limited.

microsoft takes me where i want to go, each day

Your choice, of course.

mr. mark, good post! Touchpad driver for Win XP: I found a download for a Synaptics touchpad driver for WinXP on the Dell web site support.dell.com

I installed the driver and found when clicking its icon in systray I get a whole bunch of tabs - even for my optical mouse, all in one place.

I could not find this driver elsewhere.
