The delusion is that the world's farmers will starve if not given American help, open trade and open borders. Or that America should be involved in forcing "truly free" trade policies on others.

We don't have the answers to the worlds' problems, we have our own problems. It is neither in the Constitution, nor common sense. Those arrogant enough to think so should ply their trade at the U.N. or Join the Peace Corps.

The dishonesty in this column is that "free trade" is helpful to the poor farmers, and that it's all the environmentalists' fault.

Bringing these poor farmers into the world trading system will enable them to take the first steps up the ladder of economic development.

This implies that after thousands of years of getting along they would now starve without the "ladder of economic development", when in fact that development is what is most profitable for multinationals who support the WTO.

Farmer's using low-yield non-chemical methods and non-GM seeds are opting out of the multinational merry-go-round, and won't be paying royalties to Monsanto. That's their choice.

Sad, but true. The Religious insanity of the Environmentalists is only exceeded by the economic insanity of the Farm Subsidies.

I have been interested to hear lots of protests against farm subsidies aired on NPR. I'm not sure who is doing the protesting, but if the anti-globo movement turns to this, they will finally! be using their energies for a sensible protest. That would be a BIG improvement.
