Anecdotal Evidence Points To Market Upturn - Economist

Isn't an anecdote a joke?

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Although Thursday's jobless claims report disappointed, there's some evidence that the economy is improving, said Bank One Corp.'s (ONE) chief economist Diane Swonk.

"We see some anecdotal evidence that things are starting to turn," the Chicago-based Swonk said in a CNBC interview. The economist cited a report by the Institute for Supply Management, which said service-sector and manufacturing activity were strong in August.

Additionally, Chicago's middle-market manufacturers and trucking industry is picking up, Swonk added.

However, the economist remains concerned about jobless claims, which the Labor Department reported rose to a two-month high last week.
