Agree on Friedman. Bipolar.

On pairing Israeli hard-ass and conciliatory moves, this reminds me of a column I just read in the Jpost. The writer recommended evaculated some of the most isolated settlements and turning them into IDF garrisons, on the theory that this would show willingness to evacuate settlements without giving any concession - just the opposite.

Might work if the Palestinian capacity for believing in illusory "triumphs" weren't so great.

All the desperate contortions by the US and Israel wrt to the Palestians remind me of the various behaviors by the family of drunk, who believe that their loved one is only drinking because of the way they behave, and they can fix it somehow by behaving differently, a belief encouraged by the drunk.

There will be no peace until someone who wants peace - on some terms that leave Israel standing - comes to power and begins to behave like a head of state. While Arafat is still there, offering concessions is useless.
