I didn't make it up. I got the figure from an article I read many years ago that a doctor (an epidemiologist like yourself) had written in a fit of truth telling.

I remembered the article primarily because when I read it my oldest sister was then currently being treated in a hospital for withdrawal from prescription drugs all of which were prescribed by her doctor and used according to her doctor's direction. She never learned her lesson and now thirty years later has a pill organizer over flowing and her health has never been worse. Most of what she's being treated for are chronic conditions for which there is no real cure but can only be managed with lifestyle changes. It makes me crazy to see her going to one doctor to another getting one prescription after another always winding up going down the same road.
