I don't know enough about the French left wing to comment. I know a lot of American liberals, and I don't know any who would deny that there have been horrible leaders supported by communism.

The communists in the US achieved their greatest popularity at the height of the great depression- for obvious reasons. It's hard to sell communism to a self satisfied population- and in general Americans are self satisfied.
