I guess that means Assad didn't have opposition because everyone in Syria supported him

It means there is a tradition of consensus building around a predetermined leader [who HAS TO reach compromises with tribal leaders to be supported, in a land where everybody has guns and no real inhibition to firing them] rather than a pissing race between a number of VERY SIMILAR leaders, which most ME people see "democracy" to be.

(Just what exactly was the difference between Bush and Gore? Going to such effort to select between two candidates with such slight differences of proclaimed opinion & intentions can seem bizarre to someone who is not used to the system. You obviously think it is "normal", but that is only because you are used to that system.)

A better approach is to at least TRY to understand other people's ways.

If you are not going to do it because you appreciate diversity and humbly accept yours might not be the only way, do it because America might benefit from knowing how the "lesser people" tick so the US can "shock and awe" them better next time it gets the "regime change" urge :-)

Face it - You guys are not the only group of people in the world. You are not even the better living, happiest people around. OK, you've got a system, but so do some others and they are not trying to impose their way on you. They are not even saying you should change yours because their way is better.

Setting aside this chest-thumping "Our way is the greatest, no, the ONLY way" might actually be good for you guys.

I'm glad it is alien to me.

Do I need to remind you just what happened in the last US elections? Was it Bush's brother who rigged the elections for him? Didn't they found ballot boxes left uncounted in garbage dumps? Is it not true that you cannot say for certain that Bush is properly elected by majority votes?

What are you talking about? Your elections were laughing stock of the whole world. Assad's election pales in comparison to that of Bush.
