OK, I guess we have to go through the whole explanation from A to Z.

Making just a few drives for the few dozen iPods that Apple sells per year is not economical. A drive maker has to have a large committed customer before they spend their first $billion on plant and equipment. So as much as Apple might be beloved, there would not be a disk drive industry if it had to depend on Apple's iPod.

>> Now there is much talk of 1" HDDs.

IBM had 100% of the 1" micro drive. But it sold it to Hitachi along with all their storage operation, including the privilege of losing $600m/year on disk drives. To their credit, Hitachi managed to reduce the loss to $400m this past year. I tried to re-find the link to detailed Hitachi financial report. But so far have not. Very likely Gus knows the exact amount without needing to look it up.

I guess today it was Maxtor's turn to be in the lead.
