When the Soviet Union left Afganistan, both nations were in the process of crumbling. The Russia which emerged from the pieces has bigger problems in Central Asia (think Chechnya) than trying to kick that tarbaby again.

I think the Russian role is limited at this time. There is probably an effort to get oil and gas moved through Russia to Europe so they can get some fees along the way, but those type of efforts would more likely involve avoiding Afganistan rather than engauging it.
