Most systems have a lot of room for improvement - at least we didn't end up with Assad in Washington. And for all the stupid, dumb things American presidents and Congresses do, gassing their own citizens isn't usually among them.

Take pleasure in small favors. Look at Berlusconi and his antics, talk about embarrassing.

The problem with the "more refined" candidates is they tend to be Ivory Tower dweebs with no emotional connection to the majority of the electorate outside of the Northeast Corridor. Clinton succeeded because he had redneck roots with an East Coast education.

But there is little respect for the snooty academic types in middle America. And that's where elections are decided from Ohio to Texas to Florida.

FDR was the last real Yankee who grabbed the imagination and loyalty of the American people. Even Kennedy won by a whisker, not a landslide.

Every system needs improvement. It's easy to criticize from afar. I personally would not wish a system that has Jacques Chirac or Monsieur LePen in the forefront. Yet, there are millions who would support these leaders while enjoying their quiche and latte in a Parisian cafe.
