It's always blown my mind that people who have given up trying to find a job are suddenly not unemployed as far as the government is concerned.
Ah, but this is so convenient if you are a politician. How wonderfully it makes problems disappear! Like inflation: put the nasty stuff you simply can't ignore in a separate "basket" and emphasize the one that behaves as you wish.
