"Why would they see it as the Pith of their Being"

Because the nature of sexual attraction is feeling of the most fundamental sort. It is innate just as is the will to survive. Just as we find our heterosexual attractions to be a fundamental part of our being, so I must assume that homosexuals make similar assumptions. Surely, it is possible to hate oneself for what one feels, but when one is feeling as all others of ones species are, then one finds no basis for self-hate.

Certainly, there is no moral attachment to what one IS. Morality relates to what one DOES--whether they do good or bad; whether they help or hurt. Thus, these people would attach no morality to the sexual nature of their being--no more than they would attach a moral qualifier to their will to survive.

If they found atavistic throwbacks who felt attracted to the opposite sex one assumes they might study the science of the matter. But one hopes they would not consider it a moral matter, but simply a matter of FACT.

"the question is, were they in a more perilous situation with special burdens imposed to overcome it?"

From what I know of homosexuals I cannot imagine why they would feel endangered. The fact that procreation was less subject to raging hormones but more subject to thoughtful planning would be something they would likely find very positive. Parents could rejoice in their daughters getting an education instead of some back-alley abortion after being raped or screwed.

"Would they consider it an evolutionary jump to suddenly have to figure out how to walk with a cane, because they no longer could rely on their legs to manage unaided?"

I suppose if they thought of it that way (unlikely in my opinion for reasons noted above and others implied) that they would consider it as an evolutionary jump backwards. Given the subjective nature of people I rather doubt this latter possibility, but there you go...we have covered the possibilities of the matter.
