They had an arsenal, legal weapons or not, and no reason for it. Weapons and religious fanaticism are a dangerous mix. They resisted arrest and created a quasi hostage situation using the children as human shields. Why didn't they just surrender like any normal people would? When you do things like that, expect big trouble.
