When Napolean did his final fatal overreach, the army that went to Moscow (and didn't come back) was only half French. Napolean had a "Coalition of the Bullied and Bought", that included troops from all over Europe. Germany and Italians and Poles, whoever he could scrape up. Those non-French troops were making the logical, Realistic, hard-nosed choice: going with the flow, joining the winning team, following the money. Oops.
