A gang robs a bank. They kill 4 guards. They run to their hideout. The cops surround them, tell them to come out. They won't. For days and days. When the cops finally go in to make the final arrest, the leader of the gang shoots the rest of the gang, then kills himself.

I would say that their leader took away their constitutional rights, and the followers let him.
