<losing a few civilians every day for 50 years>

As I recall, a little while ago, you were saying there was no war in Kashmir, and the place was being overrun by smiling tourists. Which is it?>

I lived in Kashmir for a few years, in fact around the 1971 war with Pakistan. There was no militancy in Kashmir then. Look up the Indian movies of the 1960s and 1970s and there were the token song and dance sequences shot in Kashmir. In fact the only "shootings" we heard about when I lived in Kashmir were "shooting a movie". The place was overrun with smiling tourists.

The militancy started in the mid 1980s and became extremely serious only in the 1990s with the infiltration of mujahideens from Pakistan and Afghanistan.
