I don't see how the attractive guy being gay is any more inconvenient than if he just doesn't like you. In fact, it is probably less inconvenient, because 1. your feelings won't be hurt (if he simply doesn't want to date you because he doesn't like you they would) and 2. you have the chance to have an attractive safe male friend. Since I had many gay male friends ever since middle school, I think #2 is especially important. I think life would be horrible if there were no nice men you could be sure weren't hitting on you. It's so relaxing to be around men who like other men, but who are still...men. imo of course
