That is true... for now...

The taxes to support these entitlements just
keep increasing year after year after year...
And, still, the programs are actuarially unsound...
They are "Ponzi schemes" in the sense that
current benefits are paid by current taxpayers.

But, my question is not whether or not these
entitlements are currently running a surplus.
My question is why they have increased to such
a huge share of both the federal budget and the
GDP (mostly displacing defense spending) during
just the past few decades?

Weren't you about to cite a single instance in American history where the debt was "paid off"? Panics and depressions occur when people who talk about it are even taken a LITTLE seriously.
