rrufff, I use Norton System Works 2003 and utilize only some of the utilities it contains. The only one that runs all the time is NAV auto-protect. Others I run on demand and they are: Speed Disk [defrag], Win Doctor and Disk Doctor. Like you, I strive to keep things lean.

"others who use NAV...Would you recommend the suite or the standalone?"

there are a number of symantec products that can be referenced here...

there is Norton AntiVirus (NAV), Norton Utilities (NU), Norton SystemWorks (NSW), Norton Internet Security (NIS), and Norton Personal Firewall (NPF).

NAV is a standalone antivirus program. it does not (and never did) contain Norton Utilities. it is a critical program in that it is an AntiVirus (AV) tool.

NU is a standalone tool kit containing stuff like defragmenter (Speed Disk), WinDoctor, etc.

NSW is the suite to which you referred. it contains NAV and NU.

NIS is symantec's firewall and NAV combined, with other features too.

NPF is the standalone firewall, no AV.

i will refrain from going into greater product description because the web site does so much better.

*as for a personal recommendation*... i like NSW because it has tools and the AV. a cool feature is that i can remove a NSW component like NAV and install a newer version, leaving the rest of NSW untouched. i just did that with NSW2003. i purchased the standalone NAV2004 and installed it. it detected NSW2003 on my machine and automatically incorporated NAV2004 as part of the bigger suite.

the symantec firewall, NIS and NPF, is highly regarded. i have run it on machines before and removed it reluctantly because of conflicts with my broadband upload speed.

"I'm not looking to save money as much as keeping unnecessary programs off my 'puter"

that is a very good approach.

some here will give all Norton products the thumbs down. i'm giving them a thumbs up. i've used them for about seven years with great success. i have said before that i would not want to run a computer without NSW. i feel the same way today.

very little about NSW could be called unnecessary. and i have been able to get it quite cheap because i usually wait until the end of the product cycle to purchase. right now, just before the release of NSW2004, i am seeing great deals on NSW2003... in some cases, with rebates, free.

if a user were to pick up NSW2003 free and then purchase NAV2004 and add it afterwards, they'd have a sweet suite
