I was talking about purchasing power parity. The people being taken in by relatives aren't really buying anything. Also not everyone has relatives that can or will support them. I'm not an expert on Botswana but in general in third world countries a signifigant percentage of the population lives below the standard of living that the typical poor person in the US has. Then there is the periodic mass famines. You don't really see that type of thing in the US.
