Mephisto,

Re: Contrary to press opinion, informed people tell me that Howard Dean is not as liberal as the press claims.

I've heard the same. Liberals and progressives in Vermont weren't particularly pleased by Dean who seemed more interested in balanced budgets and fiscal responsibility than he was in new, exciting social welfare programs. He had to be dragged in accepting the 'civil union' for gays that he now claims to have sponsored.

One excellent thing he said last week was that the U.S. needs a more neutral stance on the Israel/Palestine conflict. He was forced to immediately backtrack on that one, however. Anything short of full support for a war criminal like Ariel Sharon seems unacceptable to a lot of DLC type Democrats.
