And I learned to ski in Stratton. Lots of that old rural economy has been bought up by the very rich gentlemen farmers or turned into ski chalets. dean himself is from a rich old WASP family and he's typical of the new generation of wealthy idealists who live there.

Vermont doesn't have to worry about that many social or economic problems. It's a peaceful playground for the well-to-do from down south. Vermont is the way it oughta be. Plenty of room for everyone. Nice and clean and green.

Why is this relevant? Because in many ways, Vermont is not "the real job". They don't have a military, foreign affairs, serious economic, health or education problems, nothing like that. But taking charge of the country at crisis time when half the world is falling apart is real serious, and it's not a job for someone un-tested and inexperienced, no matter how smart and no-nonsense they are.
