It was under Nasser that the USSR began supplying and advising Syria and Egypt much more intensively (remember, Syria and Egypt were one country for a while). So the US began tilting towards Israel is response. But Israel still fought the 1967 War with Mirages. It wasn't until after France dumped Israel in 1967 that the US began supplying Israel heavily to counterbalance the Soviets, who had instigated the 1967 War anyway.
