In chip equipment, Applied Material (AMAT: news, chart, profile) was last at $21.59, up 3 percent. Merrill Lynch overnight raised its ratings on chip equipment makers Applied Materials and Kulicke & Soffa (KLIC: news, chart, profile) to buy from neutral.

"Our supply vs. demand analysis shows an increased likelihood for industry growth in excess of 25 percent in 2004 with the potential for a follow on growth year in 2005. Rising utilization rates, soft orders, and chip design activity support this view near term," the broker said.
