Bill Watkins' "supply chain wars" comment in the piece you quoted earlier suggested that with recent consolidation, HDD suppliers have increased their bargaining power viz-a-viz drive companies. If true, that ought to improve prospects for suppliers. What factors entered into your decision to switch sectors?

Gus,

From time to time you have mentioned that you have at various times alternated between investing in DD makers and DD component makers. Here's an interesting component maker which inter alia has 70% market share in the little brushless DC spindle motors that reside in the "dead space" in the center of the disk. online.wsj.com

The company is Nidec and its ADRs trade on NYSE under the somewhat malodorous symbol, NJ <g>.

All of the big three (MXO, STX, WDC) are customers, along with Toshiba, Fujitsu, Hitachi and IBM. 216.239.57.104

I wish I had known of this company earlier. It's shares have tripled since its ADRs were listed in October, 2001. bigcharts.marketwatch.com

Here's a brief overview of spindle motors (SPMs): nidec.co.jp

And one about its founder, Shigenobu Nagamori: businessweek.com

Here's are Nidec's key stats. Notice the tiny institutional ownership of 0.34%, if Yahoo is to be believed. Can you spell p-o-t-e-n-t-i-a-l? finance.yahoo.com

I'd be most interested in your comments. Know any other company that boasts this kind of market share leadership in HDD components?

Sam
