You are teasing me, right?

Not at all. All economic values are subjective. Something that has a high economic value to me may have no economic value to you. In general, things with economic value must be scarce, or at least costly to replace for the owner.

A company's stock certificates are one of those things that the company can replace essentially at will, whereas for an outside owner they they are both scarce and impossible to replace, and so have value.
