This war could have been justified any time on the basis of human rights, alone

That's the sum total of his article.

There was no such justification offered, since it would be have been debated along with other demonic regimes in the world. The administration didn't want to discuss other demonic regimes. It had a plan in place to take over the ME starting with Iraq, not for humanitarian purposes, but according to the blueprint PNAC documents, to extend US power, pure and simple.

for a journalist to present himself as a hero in this situation is completely and totally bogus

I disagree with that. If he handled himself the way he says, that shows personal physical courage.

There is corruption in our business. We need to get back to basics

True, especially for editors and owners, who need to allow stories from all sides, and all countries with totalitarian regimes.

John Burns

Wow. What a report. It is going to have a lot of credence because of who he is and who he work's for. He is angry and rightfully so. His courage is to be commended, but he is damn lucky he is alive. As he says, if he was not armored with the NYT it would not have gone as well for him.

I have a difficult time being too hard on the media that went along with Saddam. They faced being fired if they got kicked out and didn't get what story was available. And John's kind of courage is rare.
