>>we regard them as inferior in their political systems
(when we have far more corruption,... we regard them as inferior technologically<<

but it's quite a different story when it's not anymore we and they, but you and me. That's why it's so important for instance to see more than just our own little gated community in this world.

Of course, it may take guts to drive out through the gate, but hey, we're all risk takers, are we not... Should be at least (EDIT: parenthesis omitted on the 2nd thought)

Jim it seems to me that you did not meet the other side of Europe who are detesting Americans and their social values. I assume as a tourist you were unable to enter their so called "Social High Class" of aristocracy and intellectuals who will spend enormous efforts on hubris and anti Americanism or Materialism in their own little Castle siting on land stolen from the region peasants 2 or 3 centuries ago.

After all the European initiated W.W.I and W.W.II and had the worst dictators / henchmen in the 20th Century, performed the most horrendous atrocities in the name of their government and are in a state of denial or finger pointing now.

Not that the US in it's infancy did not engage in destruction of nations (American Indians) or slavery, but that was last century and after all, was done by people who arrived form Europe with European values.

I do not think that the US has a harsh or arrogant approach toward Europe, or relate to to them as inferior it may be that this administration need to learn some courtesy but that is all.

Neither the US or Europe is clean of corruption and extortion groups but would say on a relative basis in the US you have a better chance to bring those types to justice than in Europe.

I could go on and on, but will stop at that ......

You remind me of someone I knew once. He used to say aloud, somewhat wistfully:

And I have known the arms already, known them all--
Arms that are braceleted and white and bare
[But in the lamplight, downed with light brown hair!]
Is it perfume from a dress
That makes me so digress?
Arms that lie along a table, or wrap about a shawl.
And should I then presume?
And how should I begin?
