Bald Eagle, you might want to take that reasoning one step further. When you say that the "extra oil might just bring down the price of it," you're making an assumption that the Iraqi oil is managed for the best interests of the U.S. economy, not the Iraqi economy. Opec has long attempted to set the price of oil. Recently they have attempted to establish a trading range from the low 20's to the high 20's.

The OPEC busting nation could be Iraq if it's oil infrastructure was upgraded and IF IT USED IT'S OIL POWER TO UNDERMINE THE PRICE STRUCTURE DESIRED BY OPEC. Why would it want to do that? Opec has economists and geologists and they have done extensive research on the best price to maximize the INTERESTS OF THE OIL PRODUCERS. That same price would presumably maximize the interests (revenues) of the Iraqis.

In order for the U.S. to benefit from cheap oil as a result of Iraqi oil flooding the markets, the oil would have to be controlled FOR THE GOOD OF THE U.S. I guess you and Cheney are on the same page; if you need it, want it and don't own it, kill a few people and take it.

I would call that more "arrogance and imperialism 101," than "economics 101."

You make the same assumption Bush and Cheney did, that the Iraqi's are going to allow their oil to be pumped and exported by an occupying country. So far not the case.

What 'extra oil'?

Even the Bushies say there won't be enough pumped in the next 5 years to cover even 1/2 of the war and reconstruction costs....

If what we wanted was more oil on the markets, we could fund development in siberia. Russia is not part of OPEC.
