Jacob has said before that he regards all killing as exactly equal. The crazed psycopath who shoots little kids for sport, and the security guard who shoots the suicide bomber before he can blow up the bus full of families, it's all the same to Jacob. Following this logic, soldiers and Mohamed Atta are equally serial killers. Hey, Mohammed Atta may come out better - maybe September 11th was his first time?

If I mistate, I'm sure Jacob can correct me.

<"serial killer", a term normally reserved for human predators who seek to slay innocent and defenseless civilians (usually women and children)>

<A soldier is trained to hunt and kill specific personnel, enemy soldiers. He is not trained to kill, nor generally finds any "honor or glory" in killing, defenseless civilians.>

Using your definitions, was Freeman Dyson a "serial killer" or a "soldier"?

His story, briefly:

At the beginning of the war, I was a follower Ghandi, morally opposed to all violence.

After a year of war I retreated and said, "Unfortunately it seems bombing is necessary to win the war, but I am morally opposed to bombing cities indiscriminately."

When I arrived at Bomber Command and discovered we were bombing cities indiscriminately, I said "This is morally justified as it's helping win the war."

A year later I said, "Our bombing is not helping win the war, but at least I'm helping save the lives of bomber crews."

In the last spring of the war I had no excuses and had no moral position left.
