Countries run by militaries, even military intelligences, are notoriously unpleasant and repressive.

Oh, I don't know about that.. Sometimes the military intelligence branches of a totalitarian regime are FAR more pragmatic and modern..

After all, Gorbachev was a protege of Yuri Andropov, the former head of the KGB.

And in the several hours I, and some associates, had in interfacing with Oleg Kalugin, former head of the KGB's 1st directorate, I found him to be quite moderate and pragmatic (even obtained an autographed copy of his book).

Perhaps I overstepped the mark in making personal comments about Chuckie in reply. Chuckie can of course reply to me by PM and tell me what he really thinks [it is obviously a he]. As you know, I make very, very few personal comments because I know there's no good reason to do so.

Well, what you feel about Chuck is between you and he. But when you libel an entire group of individuals (which you seemingly have done again in this post), I guess I take a bit of umbrage to that (having known and worked with quite a few MI types in the past)..
