If the French had anything to gain, how come they have opposed the US every step of the way, even in terms of post-war solutions in Iraq? You overlook the geopolitical climate at the time, that is, after the 2000 Prez election... Most EU countries, including France, favored Gore/Lieberman over Bush/Cheney --the Bush victory was a disappointment. As for an alliance between France, Russia and Israel, again, only a faction --the Gaullist fringe-- doesn't support Israel as regards the Palestinian issue... However, back in 2001 --and up to May 2002-- the French government was Socialist, that is, basically, a cabal of Jews, Protestants, all Zionists. PM Lionel Jospin was stoned by Palestinian youths during his visit to Ramallah because he called (Lebanese) Hizbollah a terrorist outfit... As for Russia, over one million Russian Jews and non-Jews have made it to Israel... Putin keeps posturing as a pro-Arab leader but he fools no one --suffice it to listen to him on Chechnya... Russia's bloodshed in Chechnya mirrors Israel's brutalities on the Palestinians. All in all, we'd better keep the big picture in mind: the so-called "clash of civilization" between the West and Islam is basically a series of conflicts erupting along a "squall line", that is, the border between Judeo-Christianity and Islam from Gibraltar to the Balkans to Georgia/Chechnya to Israel to Afghanistan... The European Union proved unable to deal satisfactorily with these tensions: Spain and Morocco over two barren islets off Morocco... the Balkan Wars... the admission of Turkey within the EU... the split over Israel/Palestine... And Russia's no longer capable of containing the cultural thrust of Islam in Central Asia... That's how the US got increasingly, if grudgingly, involved in the "stabilization" of the squall line. Gus
