China plans manned space mission

Beijing, Sept 16.(PTI): China is just weeks away from launching its first manned space mission, Science and Technology Minister Xu Guanhua said here today. Preparations are well under way for China's first manned space mission, widely expected to rocket an astronaut into orbit within the next few weeks or months, Xu said.

"As far as I know, all the preparatory work for the launching of 'Shenzhou V' is going very smoothly," Xu told reporters at a news conference.

But, he declined to say when China would try to become the third country to send a man into space after the former Soviet Union and the United States.

Reports have said the launch will occur in the second half of this year and there is intense speculation it could take place around China's national day on October 1.

"I think relevant departments will announce relevant details," Xu said without confirming reports that the spacecraft, Shenzhou (Divine Vessel) has already reached the Jiuquan Launching Centre in north-western Gansu province and was undergoing final prep arations.

Sun Laiyan, Vice Administrator of the China National Space Administration (CNSA), declined to reveal the exact launch date or confirm reports it would occur in mid-October.

China, a major space power, has already conducted four successful unmanned space flights and tested many equipments required for a manned flight.

China has also announced plans for probes of the moon and Mars. Xu said Beijing's manned space initiatives would help spur hi-tech growth.

this article has not mentioned that the space ship China designed is a little dif. from what the US and ex-USSR designed. It is safer and more reasonable.
