Parking Poses Problems For Democrats
Penalties, Fines Could Be Cleared In Next 24-48 Hours

POSTED: 1:38 p.m. CDT September 16, 2003

AUSTIN, Texas -- Several state Democrats had trouble getting to work Tuesday morning.

Orange traffic barrels and traffic cones prevented 11 Democratic senators from parking in their usual spots at the state Capitol Tuesday morning.

Democratic Senators Feel Parking Sanctions Are Petty

Republicans imposed the parking restrictions after the Democrats ran off to Albuquerque, N.M., in July.

"It is just so petty," San Antonio Democratic state Sen. Leticia Van De Putte said. "Let's get on and talk about some things that people really want to talk about."

Well senators, that's what we've been asking you to do for 3 special sessions but you couldn't stay and talk, you turned tail and ran outta town.

Some of the senators autographed the barrels that blocked their spots outside the state Capitol, and although many have smiles on their faces, News2Houston reported that many find the sanctions unbelievable.

"We've got barrels in parking spots," Austin Democratic state Sen. Gonzalo Barrientos said. "give me a break. Let's get down to business."

Well we gave you a break.....three of 'em!!

McAllen's Democratic state Sen. Eddie Lucio said he doesn't understand how someone could invite you back to work and not provide you a place to park -- where Lucio said he has parked for the last 12 years.

Invite you back? It was your job to stay and not turn tail and run when you were faced with something you didn't like!!!

Republicans -- like Sen. Kyle Janek, of Houston -- had no trouble parking at the Capitol, and they are also not apologizing for taking the punitive action.

"I take it they are all still in tact and nobody is parking in places they aren't supposed to," Janek said. "Hopefully, we will get all this stuff behind us."

When News2Houston asked Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst if he thought the parking situation was petty, his response was that everyone needed to play by the rules.

"All societies work by everyone following the law," Dewhurst said.

The lieutenant governor said it is likely that the penalties and fines imposed on the Texas Democrats will be wiped off the slate over the next 24 to 48 hours.

However, in the meantime, the Democratic senators must be dropped off by their staff or family members.

The first redistricting plan is expected to be passed out Tuesday afternoon.

Give me a fking break. I've had it with these guys!
