have you found (or heard of) a better (and still relatively simple) way to own physical gold?

GOLD.ASX is the best exchange traded gold model but you have to be able to trade Aussie stocks. It tracks the AUD gold price very closely and because it is an open fund model with additions and redemptions able to be made in metal on the London market as well as trading the shares on the ASX (or in London) it always follows the POG (usually with a slight premium on both the bid and the ask).

Unfortunately the US markets seem threatened by such a transparent arrangement so they won't permit Wall Street to have a similar exchange traded gold fund. They need it to be obtuse and able to be manipulated so the market insiders can skim off a few bucks with their usual scams! Personally I buy and sell GOLD.ASX at the same costs as buying and selling any other stock on the ASX.
