Actually the republican right can ONLY see the obvious. They jump to stupid conclusions that appear obvious because they would rather confirm their prior world view than do the hard work of collecting information and then using critical thinking. The one thing most characteristic of the right is their lack of critical thinking. Bush and his cadre convinced themselves that Saddam had something to do with 9-11 because, though there was no physical evidence of it, it confirmed their world view. This is a world view where we are the white knights and the world is a simple place. You know, good and bad with little of the in-between stuff. They are extremely dangerous because they have not the least scintilla of self doubt. I've met people like that - they are alarming and scary - and I have nothing to do with them. They just don't possess many of the qualities that make people human. Hitler was one of them - an even more extreme example - but basically the same insane self confidence.
