Kerry beat the most popular Republican in Mass. history in William Weld to his win his seat. They did it with a grueling series of epic debates. Weld was governor, outspent Kerry and used every conceiveable attack against him. Nothing worked. Democrats are by no means shoe-ins in Massachusetts. GOP governors have been ruling there for a long time. But Kerry is such a strong campaigner that the GOP didn't even dare run anyone against him last year.

John, American Spirit is right when he says that Weld and Kerry waged an epic battle. However, since then some of the fire seems to be gone from Kerry's belly. There was a period when Kennedy was fairly dismissive of Kerry. As Kennedy's ambitions have cooled, that phase passed.
