"Snow Crash" or "Diamond Age" as an intro. "Cryptonomicon" is the masterpiece.

I read Snow Crash first and was blown away. You don't get to really understand what is going on until the 200th page, so patience, if you start with that one. The attention to historical detail (Sumerian legends, especially re Tower of Babel, figures on the Code of Hammurabi, etc) is staggering, all woven into a tale of a near future world quite similar to that of Gibson. The difference between Gibson and Stephenson, imho, is that the latter can and does tell a good and intelligent cyberpunk based on some very interesting ideas, rather than just throw those ideas in the air and let the reader look at them and say "Nice, but...".

And I have to mention that the continuous mention of the WTC attacks in Pattern Recognition although they bear no relation to the story whatsoever had more than a passing resemblance to a pathetic attempt to make the book interesting by linking it to a tragedy. Yuck. Very, very low.
