I *wish* the Republicans were actually interested in shrinking the state. The problem is, they are just rear-guard social democrats. Krugman is a fine polemicist, but his arguments consist largely of hyperbole and emotion, rather than reason, despite his academic credentials. He doesn't ever clarify any issues. He just provides moral support to those who already agree with him. Do we really need another beltway hack, another Capital Gang-style s***slinger?

ild, Good reasoning except for picking on Mallard Fillmore. Mallard is usually wrong, but he's usually very funny. Only when he lied about WMD did he come off as something other than a breath of fresh air. And even then, he had a USA Today quote to back Mallard's opinion, so it wasn't Mallard's lie. He just passed it along. <G>
