Ashcroft isn't threatening democracy. Even if the worst of what most of his opponents say was true (and it is not) he would not be threatening democracy but rather threatening freedom, or constitutional rights.

I'm not the biggest fan of Ashcroft but his is no danger to democracy and the danger he presents to constitutional rights has been vastly exaggerated and is less then the danger from other recent politicians and appointed officials.
