<<(A very OT post that I hope doesn't get totally out of hand...)
Going very much out on a limb at this early stage, I predict that Wesley Clark will be the next Democratic nominee for President.>>

I'll make an exception to my no-OT-post personal rule to note that I join you out on that limb. Of course, this is not my area of expertise, my legacy of political miscalculation dates back to my decision to 'keep clean for Gene' McCarthy (that was 1968, for those not old enough to recognize the slogan).

Bush is toast*. It will take a real odd choice by the democrats to lose the next Presidential election. That is why I support Hillary Clinton* for the nomination. <g>

By 2Q 2004 it will be evident that the economy is not generating sufficient job growth. But it will be too late to turn on employment and Bush will take the fall.

Credit card claims placed for collection with my firm have been flat for over 6 months though at an historically high plateau. That ended abruptly in mid July when we saw a sharp increase in claims. That is 3 months ahead of the normal seasonal upswing and far too big to represent seasonality. (Summer is generally flat to down.) Unemployment in Missouri and the St. Louis standard statistical district is down YOY. But that is very misleading since many have given up seeking employment and there has been a significant (3%-4%) out-migration. Missouri is a swing state in Presidential elections and often votes with the winner.

* The irony is that I will vote for Bush regardless of who the Dems nominate.

OT: When it comes to good ol' dirty politics, will he be frozen out of the Dems' mainstream channels for support, funding and, most important, the nomination? This was what happened with McCain (my favorite in 2000) when he ran as the outsider against the Pubbies' choice of party stalwart Bush. I could even see Gore jumping back in to "defend the faithful".

I kind of hope you are right--very likeable, very articulate, and I think he tries to stay on topic--thoughtfully so. I think his values are in the right place (as far as I'm concerned--sorry IJ). His not so veiled critiques during the lead-up to and prosecution of the war caught me off-guard.

I'll better you and predict a Dean/Clark (VP) ticket and they'll win.

OT, predictions. I'll take the bait...

>>the ensuing election will be close and determined by events in Iraq between now and November 4th next year.<<

Call me cynical and I sure hope I'm wrong but I think the outcome of the election might also be determined by some "untimely" events that could come from the Korean peninsula.
