Here are some words by a woman who lived in the 1600s. Does this sound remotely like the wide or narrow path being followed by most in the United States today?

"Whenever all has been said and done, what still remains is the fact that God is God. All that is of man and his own doing, be it ever so noble, must first be destroyed. All efforts - no, the very existence - of self must be destroyed. Nothing opposes God more than self. The purity of your spirit will increase in proportion as it loses its selfhood. By departing from selfhood, you will have acquired the purity and innocence of God. To unite two things so opposite as the purity of God and the impurity of the creature, the simplicity of God and the multiplicity of man, much more is required than the efforts of the creature. Nothing less than an operation of the Almighty can ever accomplish this, because two things must have similarity before they can become one. The impurity of dross cannot be united with the purity of gold."
