NYSE Names Reed Interim CEO, Chairman

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The New York Stock Exchange on Sunday said John Reed, a former executive at Citigroup Inc., would serve as interim chief executive and chairman, following the resignation last week of former head Richard Grasso.

Reed, 64, retired as chairman and co-chief executive of Citigroup in April 2000. He left his position there after losing a power struggle for the top job to Sanford "Sandy" Weill.

At a press conference Sunday morning, Reed was introduced by Blackrock Inc. Chairman Laurence Fink, head of an internal executive committee assembled only on Friday by the NYSE.

Reed was not at the meeting, but in a conference call he said he was not going to be a permanent candidate for the position. He said he was calling from an island off France and would be at the exchange in about a week.

Reed said he had only been to the exchange building once in his long career and had never met Grasso, although he anticipated speaking to him soon. Reed said he would be paid $1.

Prior to the merger of Citicorp and Travelers Group Inc. in 1998, from 1984 to 1998 he the chairman and CEO of Citicorp and Citibank. He joined Citibank in 1965.

He holds degrees form Washington and Jefferson College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He said he will step down from the one board of directors of which he is currently a member -- Altria Group, Inc.
