Boy you hit it on the head, and he blew it. IMO he was probably the last one that had a chance.

I used to subscribe to 'The Atlantic', and recall an excellent article by David Stockman. Per recollection this is exactly what DS said, and was the reason he left. The pollster dudes won out, and it has essentially been pollster politics ever since. Probably always was to a certain extent, but I think the Reagan admin ushered it into the modern era. Maybe it had something to do with the Hollywooders.

by next year, momentum will be all negative
I have stressed for a full year now the DYNAMICS OF CHANGE
otherwise delivered by means of momentum

dollar decline
rising rates
falling real estate values
unwinding of numerous hedging and carry trades
