The Israeli mood, as I read it, is grim, and is moving to the conclusion that there is no substitute for victory in this war.

What John forgets in the endless Algerian comparisons, is how self-restrained the use of Israeli power has been, even in Spring 2002. The Israelis are not going to set and take this without one thorough try at a full-scale counter insurgency war. I can hear John saying, oh it will do nothing except kill people and make things worse. But it may change those poll numbers. The Palestinian capacity for self-delusion is very great, but not entirely boundless.
