The Japanese had their own motivation -- but there was an element of desperation to be sure, a sense that all would soon be lost, and so they were willing to sacrifice their lives for their country.

There is no doubt in my mind that a sizable portion of the Palestinians living in the West Bank and Gaza are in "despair." I think it is a given. I'd be despairing, too, if I lived in squalor in either of those hellish spots.

The more relevant point in my estimation is to ask exactly why they are despairing. It seems obvious to me that the first reason is the failure of their leadership to reach a reasonable accommodation with the Israelis, an accommodation I think the Israelis would make in a jiffy if they believed that terrorism would end.

Moreover, the Palestinians need to blame themselves for allowing Arafat and his cronies to lead them. There is no lack of grit and spirit in the Palestinian camp, but it is utterly misdirected. They need to change their leadership to a group that will improve their lives instead of making them grist for the mill of their leaders' personal interests.

The Palestinians are also in despair because they have made the demonization of Jews part of their social and cultural fabric. They need to discard this crude and silly thinking, otherwise they'll never deal rationally with the Israelis.
