My good friend Richard did the citizen's day in the tour a few years ago. It's the day when the regular riders have a rest day and the amateurs from all over the world are allowed to do the course through the mountains that the tour will go on the next day. well in my case, the course selection was certainly more daunting than i expected. partly because i had hiked parts of the course and *thought* i had a feel for the area....fortunately there were a few look out points where you could stop and take pictures....and i took every opportunity to get off the bike since it felt like I HAD BATTERY ACID COURSING THROUGH MY VEINS! (yes, that's her screaming <gg>) happily i was riding with my son and one of his buddies, so there was no element of competitiveness.....(i have that when i ride in groups) each time i've been on a bike ride with them, i've wiped out, and this ride was no exception...only i got it out of the way early...<vbg> i was content to let them ride ahead of me.These guys are the most serious riders I know and if it humbled them so much it gives you a bit of insight into just how far away the pros are in terms of fitness and strength. Most Americans don't even have a glimpse of what it means to be in that kind of shape. i'm far from in that condition, but i certainly have a "feel" for the extreme challenge that it is both mentally and physically at least in the sense that whatever the level of fitness...you push it to the limit i only wish i lived in an area where the seasonal limitations weren't so imposing.....but i guess that's what vacations are for :)
