Have any suggestions on where to begin?

I think we have to begin with where we ended, with a rationale for his setting his standard where he does. Then we can see if that makes the cut or not. Right now, I still can't evaluate the situation. I know what he believes and what stand he's taking but I still don't have a justification.

Earlier you suggested that his belief was enough and he didn't need a justification. If that's the case, then we can discuss it from that angle instead.

Conscientious objectors in combat don't just get a free pass
for flipping the peace sign. You must (and should) provide the foundation that
warrants such a stand on conscience.

And even then they didn't get a free pass. They had to do altenate service, or be medical orderlies, or such.
