Yes, I don't think you'll find anyone in this administration who will say that diplomacy is a waste of time. However, I don't think it is the first tool that some would draw on.

Specifically, they are the ones that I label 'neocons'. Rumsfeld, with his undiplomatic way of putting things. Cheney, who should be an ambassador for American good will. Wolfowitz, whose mind-bogglingly bad counsel has gotten us off to such a rotten start in post-war Iraq. Those who write and shape Bush's speeches, which rarely offer a symbolic olive branch to other nations (e.g. his 'challenge' to other nations to help in Iraq; the smarmy 'coalition of the willing', etc).

I believe the neocons rely too heavily on the "big stick" recipe, and forget Teddy Roosevelt's not-so-secret "speak softly" ingredient.

Buchanon was one of the only righties who saw through the Iraq War BS from the beginning. Give him credit. Maybe it's the neocons who aren't the "good conservatives".
